Profile

Barbara Horejs is an archaeologist and has been Scientific Director of the Austrian Archaeological Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and Head of the Department of Prehistory and West Asian/North East African Archaeology since 2021, having already headed the Institute of Oriental and European Archaeology from 2013 to 2020. She is an honorary professor at the Universities of Tübingen and Vienna, a member of the German Archaeological Institute, an honorary member of the Bulgarian Institute of Archaeology and a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. She has published five monographs, co-authored 13 other books, published over 120 articles and acts as editor for the journal Archaeologia Austriaca and several international book series. She leads international and interdisciplinary teams in archaeological fieldwork and material studies in Turkey, Greece, Iran, Bulgaria and Serbia with a focus on the late Pleistocene and early to middle Holocene and has been awarded ERC, FWF and other highly competitive project grants.

 

Key research topics

  • Prehistoric archaeology in Western Asia and Europe with a focus on Southeast Europe, the Aegean, Anatolia and the Near East
  • Research questions on Neolithisation, intensification and centralisation as well as knowledge transfer, communication networks, chronologies, material studies and technologies in the Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age (Late Pleistocene - Middle Holocene)
  • Many years of experience in leading international and interdisciplinary teams in excavations, geoarchaeological surveys and landscape archaeology
